Quote by 'Neogaf' Interview with Hideo Kojima:

"To refresh your memory, last year I said the PlayStation 3 was a big meal that you have once a year, the 360 was a special meal that you have on weekends, and the Revolution - as it was called at the time - was your everyday meal. Last year, it was the same family changing meals according to the situation; that was my line on it.

Now, the PlayStation 3 is like a movie theater for people who want to see this movie on the big screen with THX and 5.1 audio, even if they have to pay a high price. The XBox 360 is DVD. Basically, you don't know what movie you want to see, so you go to the store and see if you can pick up a good one. The Wii is like a TV for when you're home and you don't know what you want to watch but you [want to] have that variety.

So I think the three platforms are really distinctive and they mostly don't overlap each other -- people who love movies watch TV all the time. We have to be very quick [with what we're doing in terms of games]. We can't wait long to turn on TV, and also, the programs have to be in all varieties so everyone is satisifed, as opposed to the movie theaters, where everything has to be high spec. People want high emotions. You want to be touched watching it on the big screen. For DVD, or the 360, you need to have a lot of variety so when people stop by they'll pick up your product. Maybe in the future, you'll see three DVDs for $10." Read More...

gamesasylum: EA have been silently working away on Need for Speed: Carbon for the past year, and have granted The Official PlayStation 2 Magazine the first "low(ered) down" in the latest issue. That's their pun, not ours, if you're wondering.

There's a bit of confusion as to where the subtitle originates from. Obviously there's the whole carbon fibre thing, but as well as a large urban city to roam freely around, there are also three canyon environments including one based on Carbon Canyon - a popular location in California for "motoring enthusiasts".

The developers are looking to include between 50 and 100 vehicles, incorporating some that are yet to be unveiled by their manufacturers and, for the first time in a NFS title since 2000, a range of Porsches. read More...

gamedaily.com: Some people loved Halo 2, others prefered the first. Is it possible that Halo 3 could suck?

When Bungie released Halo 2 on November 9, 2004 it became the only game that I have ever awarded a perfect score, and looking at the title on Gamerankings.com, I'm definitely not alone. However, and while I cannot speak for other journalists, the five out of five score has always bothered me. I'm not about to change it (what's done is done), but looking back on the experience and having played it a few more times, the game doesn't stand up all that well. Technical shortcomings notwithstanding (which I addressed in the review), Halo 2's not a five for a host of reasons, which is why I wasn't hyped after watching Bungie's recently released Halo 3 video. Not only does it smack of painfully awkward self promotion, but nobody mentions Halo 2's maladies and how they're going to be erased in the sequel, because it's certainly possible for the same issues to appear in the new game.

With that being said, here are five reasons why Halo 3 might not be all that great. There's a better than good chance that it'll be stellar, but it's always good to play devil's advocate, especially since I dubbed the last game as the mother of all first person shooters. WTF!?! Read More...

IGN: PlayStation head-honcho Ken Kutaragi has been making a concerted effort lately to let people know the PlayStation 3 is intended to be a computer and not just a game system. Adding further leverage to this argument are comments Kutaragi made recently in an interview with Japanese newspaper Nikkei BP.

According to GamerNode, Kutaragi hinted at the PlayStation 3 being offered on a built-to-order basis, as many PCs are.

Kutaragi says, "A PS3 just for you!
"As the PlayStation 3 is a computer, we might even offer it on a built-to-order basis, customized to the needs of each and every user," Kutaragi is quoted as saying. "The hardware components have been designed in a modularized format with this possibility in mind." Read More...

gamespot: In the completely unsurprising department, the first PlayStation 3 bundle from an online retailer has hit the Net, and it's expensive. Gamers who thought the initial Xbox 360 bundles were pricey at a minimum of $600 should sit down before reading the next sentence. Play.com is selling the PlayStation 3 with the 60GB hard drive and three games for 549 pounds, roughly $1,016. The three games included are Warhawk, Formula One 06, and SingStar--perfect for gamers who like air combat, driving, and karaoke games.

Of course the PlayStation 3, like most gaming products, will be more expensive across the pond relative to the US market. The 60GB PS3 was announced to launch in Europe for 599 euros or 425 pounds, which is the American equivalent of $758 and $799, respectively. Read More...

Yahoo! Games is running a piece comparing the PS3 and 360. They look at the hardware, software, and HD offerings for Sony and Microsoft's next-gen consoles.

From the article: "Unlike the last generation, where Sony clearly held a commanding lead, the next generation of gaming is going to be a much closer race between the behemoths of Microsoft and Sony. Though there were many skeptics last fall, the past eight months have shown the Xbox 360 to be a very capable system and more than powerful enough to challenge the PlayStation 3. Microsoft also believes it will have 10 million units in the global marketplace before Sony even leaves the gate. So the question becomes: Which system do you buy?" Read More...

IGN: Matt Lee, one of Microsoft's top-level game developers (and creator of Dope Wars) spoke to PC enthusiast site Ars Technica today about all things next-gen gaming. Through the fog of super-brain techno-jargon it is clear Lee is not impressed with the Sony PlayStation 3 and its Cell proccessor.

"I don't think the Cell is as well designed for game development as Sony would have you believe," Lee told the site. According to Lee the design of the PS3's Cell is more suited for "serialized streaming math code" which is common in video codecs and audio processing. This makes sense considering Sony's push for the inclusion of the next-gen Blu-Ray format in its console. Read More...

[...]
Given the royalty conundrum and the desire for cutting-edge graphics, many assumed that the next GTA would be based on an all-new engine. So when word began to spread that MTV was saying GTA IV would be based on RAGE, industry watchers nodded approvingly. After all, the technology--which stands for Rockstar Advanced Game Engine--was developed in-house at Rockstar, meaning no royalty payments to third parties would be necessary. Furthermore, Rockstar Games presents Table Tennis shows that RAGE is capable of both impressive graphics and physics, two areas which drew fire from GTA detractors. Read More...

gamesindustry.biz: A report on website Games Radar claimed that Sony was having trouble fitting all the PS3's components within the console case without risk of overheating. The article also suggested that the Cell processor could run at a lower speed than originally stated.

But Sony spokesperson Jonathan Fargher told Eurogamer: "The PS3 downgrade story is categorically not true.

"Developers have been working with PS3 dev kits for anywhere between eight and 12 months, and to suggest that we'd now take the decision to downgrade the hardware at such a late stage, is, well, ridiculous. Read More...

arstechnica: Like a good soccer match, the monthly sales battles between the Xbox 360 and the PlayStation 2 have a lot of exciting back-and-forth. So far, however, the PlayStation 2 has remained in control of the match, outselling the Xbox 360 in six of the seven months since the Xbox 360's debut. The situation is a strong reminder that Sony's PS3 gamble, while huge, has a little more cushioning than is commonly recognized.

Since the release of the Xbox 360, Microsoft has averaged 246,000 console sales each month in the US, while the PS2 has seen an average of 473,000 units—a number bolstered by an estimated 1.5 million sales in December alone. Leaving out December, Sony's average drops to 302,000 per month, still outpacing the Xbox 360 by a healthy margin.Read More...
